What Causes Stretch Marks?

There are several reasons why stretch marks appear on the body and it can happen to you whether you are a man or a woman, black or white, young or old. Once you get stretch marks it is almost impossible to get rid of them however there are many treatments that you can use to dramatically improve the appearance of your skin.

What Do Stretch Marks Look Like On The Body?

Stretch marks can look different depending on the colour of your skin. If you have black skin, the marks will look pale like a mixture of beige and cream in colour. These marks look like streaks on the skin. These streaks will stand out quite prominently when they first appear but they can fade over time.

If you have white skin, the streaks are pink or light red in colour. These will also fade over time and the colour will become a mixture of a pale white or silvery.

The Reasons People Get Stretch Marks

The medical term for stretch marks is striae gravidarum. This is the common expression to describe the stretch marks in general terms. There are a few reasons why people are affected by them.

  • Rapid weight gain
  • Puberty
  • Pregnancy and giving birth
  • Increase exercise schedule

Rapid Weight Gain

It takes a certain amount of time for skin to grow and stretch. If something suddenly occurs to the body like an increase in body weight the skin has to react in order to accommodate the change. The skin will stretch to cover the extra weight. However if there isn’t enough time for the body to expand naturally, it is force to spread and the lower layers start to tear. Once the skin tissue tears it is very difficult to repair.

Puberty

When the body goes through the changes and you go from being a child into becoming an adult, you may find that your body grows exceptionally quickly. You may find that you are suddenly taller or that you put on weight around your hip and thigh area. This can also be a surprise for your skin tissue. It can not grow at the same rate so ends up tearing and the result is unsightly stretch marks on different parts of your body like your thigh and stomach area.

Pregnancy And Having A Baby

When a woman gets pregnant the body has to make space for a new life to grow and develop. The stomach area is forced to stretch and expand. This is where stretch marks can occur. The breasts will also increase in size so some women will experience the appearance of stretch marks here too.

When it is time to give birth, the body will also be forced to stretch almost unnaturally. The after effects of childbirth can be permanent stretch marks unless preventative measures are taken early enough.

Increase Exercise Schedule

Exercise is good for the body and the soul. If your exercise schedule is really intensive the result may be a great looking body with an increase in the size of your thighs, biceps and chest area. The negative side effects of such hard work could be the appearance of torn skin tissue. This will happen if your muscles have expanded so quickly that the skin hasn’t had a chance to generate and expand to accommodate them. If possible you should never have an exercise regime that is so intensive.
